I'm just going to come right out and say it: I LOVE the music that comes out of Melbourne. I feel so lucky to live in a city that hosts such a diverse range of amazing bands and artists. Pick any genre - jazz, hip-hop, indie pop, beats, folk, samba, whatever - and I guarantee you that there are an absolute boatload of bands doing amazing things within that genre (and breaking the genre boundaries too). The fact that I'm such a huge fanboy was a large part of making Play It Safe my first feature film. I know it sounds corny as hell, but when Jack and I were working through the basic story ideas I thought of the film as my love letter to the Melbourne music scene.
Because of this, I have been absolutely hell bent on getting all the details right. I want to pay respect to real musicians by making the characters and the world of the film as believable as possible. One of the more fun parts of this has been choosing props and set dressing.
We have included a whole bunch of authentic CDs, records, posters, and other cool little things from the Melbourne music scene (and some from the wider Australian scene as well). Below are a few stills from scenes we shot today. For a bit of fun I thought I'd turn this into a competition.
In the photos below I can count at least 14 clearly visible references to the local music scene. The first person to guess at least 10 will win a FREE digitial copy of the film once it's finished. Be specific, if it's an album can you name both the artist and album title? If you can guess all 14 then we'll give you an even better prize! (I don't know what it is yet, but I promise it will be good!)
